The early career framework (ECF) by the Department for Education will see early-career teachers undergoing statutory induction, entitling them to a two year training and support package when the programme launches nationwide in September. The changes will help early-career teachers succeed from the very beginning of their teaching career.

The early career framework reforms are an encouraging development that came from the Department for Education's recruitment and retention strategy, published in 2019. The framework is developed to enable early-career teachers to thrive and be the best version of themselves.

What does this mean?

The two year package of training and support is fully funded, enabling early-career teachers to benefit from in classroom mentoring. The changes are designed to help teachers feel more confident and in control at the very start of their teaching career.

While these changes continue to be rolled out, they will take effect from September 2021. Later this year, a reformed suite of national professional qualifications designed for teachers and leaders will be reintroduced. This will ensure those already in the profession will have access to the most up to date professional development opportunities.

What training provider/s will be offering this in Portsmouth? 

The Department for Education has selected four teacher training providers who have developed their own core induction programme based on the ECF. Currently, Teach First is the current provider that covers Portsmouth (subject to change) in the following five areas:

• behaviour management
• pedagogy
• curriculum
• assessment
• professional behaviours

Each programme is structured differently but contains approximately the same amount of self-study.
