Achieving qualified teacher status (QTS) is an important and exciting milestone in your teaching journey. Beginning your first teaching role may feel like a big step, but you will be provided with support to help you succeed in the classroom during your first years as a teacher.
In this article we're taking a closer look at the Department for Education's new early career framework (ECF), which sets out the updated professional development and support available to early career teachers.
What is the early career framework?
The early career framework came into effect nationally in September 2021 and has been developed to help new teachers thrive and succeed during their first years in the classroom.
The framework outlines the two years of funded personal development that early career teachers (ECTs) are now entitled to during their first two years after qualifying.
This support is designed to help you establish yourself as a teacher through developing your skills and practice and building your knowledge.
The new framework increases the length of the induction period for early career teachers from one school year to two school years.
What support will I receive?
The early career framework provides support during your first two years of teaching. This includes:
- 10% timetable reduction in your first year of induction and 5% in your second year to give you time for learning and professional development
- An assigned mentor, who will offer you support and guidance
- Access to high-quality training and resources, including curriculum materials.
The framework will support your development in the following five areas:
- behaviour management
- pedagogy
- curriculum
- assessment
- professional behaviours
