Teach Portsmouth celebrates World Teacher Day
Every year, organisations celebrate World Teacher Day to recognise the efforts of teachers, support staff and leaders in education. With COVID-19 impacting our day to day lives, this year's theme focuses on the resilience of teachers around the world and their amazing achievements.
World Teacher Day (5 October 2020) is a UNESCO organised event that commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 recommendation concerning the status of teachers.
Teach Portsmouth often hosts the Teach Portsmouth Awards ceremony in October. However, due to the current situation the awards have been postponed to 12 March 2021. To see in World Teacher Day, two special VIPs were called upon to help us celebrate the occasion as well as showcasing the trophy design and theme for the awards.
A special message of thanks
Councillor Suzy Horton, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education at Portsmouth City Council joined in to offer her words of thanks. Previously a primary school teacher and deputy head teacher, she knows the important role teachers play in society and their efforts to support children everywhere.
"The Teach Portsmouth Awards are always a welcome addition to the city's event calendar as we celebrate our amazing teachers, support staff and leaders in the city. The awards are really important to our teaching community, as we showcase the amazing achievements of everyone."

From Portsmouth to the city's teachers
Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Rob Wood also celebrated World Teacher Day by giving a big thumbs up to the city's teachers. He celebrated the momentous day by highlighting their incredible efforts during the beginnings of the pandemic and their continued resilience now.
"The Teach Portsmouth Awards are an opportunity to celebrate the incredible achievements of Portsmouth's star teachers, staff and leaders who have supported the city's children during the pandemic. I'm really pleased to announce the new date of 12 March 2021 - we can't wait to celebrate with everyone."

It was a double celebration on World Teacher Day as the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Rob Wood and Councillor Suzy Horton revealed the trophy design, theme and new date for the Teach Portsmouth Awards. To reflect the incredible efforts of colleagues in Portsmouth during COVID-19, this year's theme will be 'Portsmouth's star teachers.'
