In today's blog post we're continuing our new series introducing you to our valued sponsors who have made the Teach Portsmouth Awards 2022 possible.

Could you tell us about what you do and your connection to education?

I am currently the joint branch and district secretary of Portsmouth National Education Union alongside Helen Reeder. I have been active in the union for several years, having also served as a school rep, district equalities officer and President. I have worked in the city for 14 years, having trained with Portsmouth SCITT, and am a full-time serving teacher at Craneswater Junior School where I currently teach year 4 and am PSHE lead.

What do the Teach Portsmouth Awards mean to you/organisation?

Portsmouth National Education Union has been in existence in one form or another since 1871 when Portsmouth Teachers Association was formed so we have a long history of representing teachers and educators across the city. As a union we represent over 1700 educators – be they support staff, teachers or leadership members in schools and colleges as well as local authority staff and those still in training.

We recognise the vital role that everyone working in education makes for our young people. We know that working in education isn't always easy, it can be tiring, and the hours can be long, but our city has some of the most dedicated, hardworking and talented educators who go above and beyond day in, day out. We are proud to sponsor these awards in recognition of the brilliant job our city's educators do and want to say a huge thank you to them all.

What are you looking forward to from the awards ceremony?

I am looking forward to seeing those nominated be recognised for the work they do and hearing about their achievements. I am always proud to be a Portsmouth teacher, and especially proud to be the joint secretary of the biggest education union in the city, and the Teach Portsmouth Awards prove why. Teachers are often modest about their achievements and don't always get the recognition they deserve so I'm looking forward to cheering my fellow Portsmouth educators on and generally celebrating our wonderful profession!

What special message do you have for Portsmouth's teachers, support teams and leaders?

First of all, you are amazing! Every day you make a positive difference to children and young people in our city. Keep doing all that you do and know that the National Education Union are here supporting you.
