Webinar: Teach Portsmouth presents early years education

Become a nursery practitioner with Teach Portsmouth's latest webinar

Teach Portsmouth's webinar series returns in the new year to showcase the incredible careers in early years education, in particular nurseries.

Set to take place on Monday 17 January from 4pm - 5pm, the webinar will help young people understand their next steps after school as well as practitioners looking to progress into a more senior role.

The webinar is part of Aspiration's Week, a weeklong event for children, young people, and adults to learn new skills, achieve qualifications and progress in their career.

Councillor Suzy Horton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education at Portsmouth City Council said:

Councillor Suzy Horton talking about her support for the webinar series.

"Teach Portsmouth's webinar series is a fantastic way to learn about teaching in primary, secondary and post-16 settings. The profession is alive with incredible careers with nursery practitioners being one of them.

"The pandemic has shone a light on the need to recruit qualified individuals to support children at the very start of their lives. We need the right type of people to become nursery practitioners who understand the rewards and challenges of working with children. The webinar is the perfect introduction that will provide the information people need to begin a new career in that sector."

The webinar will myth bust perceptions and showcase the responsibilities a nursery apprentice will have at the very start of their training. It will also position the profession as one where the sky is the limit when it comes to progressing in the career.

Three local experts will share their own experiences of working in the city including an apprentice, nursery practitioner and nursery manager.

Webinar host, Mindy Butler, childcare and early years manager at Portsmouth City Council will take people step by step through the process of training through to owning their own nursery.

Mindy Butler has owned and run three Montessori nurseries. She now support nurseries in Portsmouth through advice and training.

"I understand the huge rewards a career in early years can bring after setting up my own nurseries. The webinar is designed for those who are considering their next steps after school who are interested in joining the profession as well as practitioners already in the sector who want to progress.

"Aspiration's Week is a chance for us to celebrate this amazing work practitioners do but also inspire others to consider the role."
