Take part in lessons and get a feel for what it's like in a Portsmouth classroom

Experience a classroom setting

For most of us, the last time we set foot in a classroom was back at school. People who have been on the programme tell us how important the experience was before applying for teacher training.

Applicants will work alongside a single teacher during their experience and participate in lessons as a teaching assistant.

See a lesson in real time and understand what it takes to become a teacher

Make the most of face-to-face contact

School experience programmes are a fantastic way to see different teaching methods. The conversations that take place during the programme will often shape your future career and can be a great way to ask questions. Consider the types of questions you might ask during the experience to help you make that all important decision at the end of it.

Did you know?

While we encourage those who have little to no experience, we also welcome back teachers who have been away from the profession. The teacher experience programme is a fantastic way to get back in the classroom after time away and get a feel for what's changed and what remains the same. If you are not from Portsmouth but considering a move to the city, it could be a great introduction to the city's schools.

Take the opportunity to meet senior team leaders who can give you insight into school life

Meet a senior team leader

While experience in a classroom is important, meeting a senior member of the team is equally vital as it helps shape your view of teaching.

Senior leaders can discuss progression opportunities and provide top tips when you apply for teacher training. Forming contacts early on is also beneficial as you may find long term relationships result in future job offers.

Do I need any experience beforehand?

The teacher experience programme is the perfect opportunity for someone with no teaching experience to get involved. The programme will give you up to 3 days in a Portsmouth primary or secondary school.

Do my skills match what schools are looking for?

You might be working in an industry unrelated but feel your skills could benefit a school. Or you might be about to graduate university and interested in teaching. We welcome qualified candidates from all backgrounds.

Do I need a DBS check?

Once we have confirmed your place, the school will carry out a DBS check on your behalf. This is a requirement before starting the programme.

What qualifications do I need?

If you would like to apply for the programme, you will need to have a C grade or equivalent in maths and English. You must also be working towards a degree (third year) or already have a degree qualification or equivalent. Our team will happily support you and advise where necessary.

What if I gained my qualifications abroad?

If you gained some of your qualifications overseas, you will need to confirm the UK equivalent. You can do this by calling the DFE's 'get into teaching' line on 0800 389 2600.
