Career changers welcomed at Teach Portsmouth webinar
If you've been considering a switch to the profession, our latest webinar: changing career to teaching might be for you. We welcomed 26 people on Wednesday 27 January as they heard from two teachers about their move from engineering and public service to teaching.
Hosted by Simon Barrable, principal at Portsmouth College, two teachers, Tarryn Williams and Sean Archibald spoke about their experience making a move and what people should do. Top tips were given about how to choose the right route when there are different options to consider. Simon also gave information on his journey, offering an insight into senior leadership roles. Those who attended the webinar were able to submit questions as part of a live Q&A. After the webinar, Simon reflected on his involvement and why digital events like this are so important:
"In normal times, we would be hosting face to face events. Webinars are a great way to reach audiences that aren't in Portsmouth and for those who might find it difficult attending in person events.
"I really enjoyed being part of Teach Portsmouth presents: changing career to teaching. Tarryn and Sean did a great job discussing their experiences in an industry before joining the profession. Anyone who missed the webinar can watch a recording online."

While the webinar is over, a recording can now be found on January's webinar page. If you know someone who might be interested in joining the profession, a set of top questions which were answered during the webinar by panellists will be available soon.
Councillor Suzy Horton, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education welcomed the webinar's success:
"It's great to see career changers engage with the webinar, especially when attendees hear advice from people who have experienced a career move into teaching first hand.
by Councillor Suzy Horton, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education
"Last year, the Department for Education saw an increase in teacher training applications during the first lockdown. While the outlook for the economy still looks uncertain, teaching does provide a secure career for the right person."
